This event, held March 26, 2024, brought together experienced school food program providers from across Ontario for a knowledge-sharing event hosted by the Ontario Chapter of the Coalition for Healthy School Food (chaired by Sustain Ontario). This event was our second school food financing webinar.

Check out the recording here.

The event began with an update about provincial and national school food progress – slides here – after which we heard from three panelists:

  • Ulla Knowles – former student nutrition program manager with FoodShare Toronto – shared how she and others helped get the City of Toronto to invest in school food programs, and what made their advocacy successful. The City of Toronto is the largest municipal contributor to school food in Canada (over $18M as of Budget 2024). Slides here.
  • Chris Peacock – The Sharing Place Food Centre in Orillia – spoke about their organization’s fundraising model, including strategies such as relationship building, media and donor outreach, taking a big picture approach to storytelling to help make the case for support, and what kinds of grants they target. Slides here.
  • Kellie Brace – Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation – spoke to their new 50/50 fundraiser to support their regional SNPs, as well as how their Feed the Meter campaign works and was established in partnership with their local municipality. Slides here.

The webinar then opened up for discussion. Thank you to all of our speakers and participants for the rich discussion!
