The York Region Food Council, the Social Planning Council of York Region (SPCYR) and the York Region Food Network are hosting an upcoming event, Nourishing York Region: Using food to build stronger, resilient communities, on Monday, May 17, from 12 – 1 p.m.

The event will feature chef, author & activist Joshna Maharaj, a two-time TEDx speaker who believes strongly in the power of chefs and social gastronomy to bring values of hospitality, sustainability & social justice to the table.

The discussion will explore:

  • The power of food and how it can be used to build our local food system
  • The impact of COVID-19 on our food systems
  • Putting food at the centre of rebuilding our society and economy
  • Local opportunities with values-based food procurement
