Ontario Dietitians in Public Health (ODPH) have just released an updated Position Statement and Recommendations on Responses to Food Insecurity.

The updated report, which follows a previous Position Statement from 2015, draws on a significant body of newer research on food insecurity and its effects. It also addresses the exacerbation of food insecurity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and offers policy responses to this systemic problem, such as implementation of a basic income guarantee.

“Ontario Dietitians in Public Health (ODPH) considers food insecurity to be an urgent public health problem and a serious human rights and social justice issue for all levels of government,” the Executive Summary states. “To effectively reduce food insecurity, ongoing policy interventions are needed that reach low-income households and improve their financial circumstances. The foundation for achieving this involves monitoring the problem through regular measurement of and reporting on the prevalence and severity of food insecurity at both the national and provincial/territorial levels.”
