Food Secure Canada (FSC) has published a policy action plan for renewing the country’s food system in response to COVID-19, Growing Resilience and Equity: A Food Policy Action Plan in the Context of Covid-19.

“The pandemic is magnifying the structural inequalities in our food systems, the insufficiencies of our social protection programs, and the challenges with the dominant food supply chains,” the press release shares.

“The moment clearly calls for visionary and bold structural change rather than piecemeal approaches based on ‘more of the same’,” said Gisèle Yasmeen, Executive Director of FSC. “The time for healthier, more just and sustainable food systems is now.”

The action plan calls for:

  • Addressing the root causes of food insecurity;
  • Building resilient, ecological local food systems;
  • Supporting Indigenous food sovereignty;
  • Championing decent work and justice for workers all along the food chain;
  • Ensuring everyone is at the policymaking table;
  • Harmonizing national and international food policies, and
  • Advancing a National School Food Program
