‘The Avoidable Crisis of Food Waste’ report shows over half of food produced in Canada is wasted

After a year-long research project, Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International have released a new study with unprecedented findings, The Avoidable Crisis of Food Waste.

The report reveals that almost 60% of the food produced in Canada is lost and wasted annually – that’s 35.5 million metric tonnes.

“Of that,” Second Harvest shares on their website, “32 percent – equalling 11.2 million metric tonnes of lost food – is avoidable and is edible food that could be redirected to support people in our communities.”

The new research also shows that the majority of food waste in Canada is taking place within the food industry, not at the household level, as previous studies had said.
