Last week, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, released the Summary Report resulting from the Farms Forever  discussion sessions held in May of 2017.  Said the Honourable Minister, Jeff Leal:

The Farms Forever discussion was a valuable conversation to highlight what my ministry is currently doing and to identify ideas that will help ensure a successful future for agriculture in Ontario. This report summarizes what was said during the Farms Forever consultations. It also provides insight into the themes that emerged from discussions: education, innovation and modernization, partnerships and collaboration, and research and knowledge sharing.

This discussion paper sets out the basis for a broad engagement on Farms Forever including four policy objectives:

  • Help preserve the productive capacity of agricultural land close to major urban centres
  • Support the local sourcing of food
  • Strengthen Ontario’s agri-food sector
  • Support young farmers and new entrants
