A new assessment studying the technical and business feasibility of mobile abattoirs, Poultry Multi-location Abattoir Field Study,
has been published in Alberta.

A self-contained 53’ trailer, towed by a highway tractor, is licensed by the provincial Meat Inspection Branch as a mobile site that will enable small producers to slaughter poultry for sale at the farm-gate the same day.

Over the course of 5 separate field studies, processes and equipment were refined, and the financial viability of mobile abattoir business scenarios are calculated. The collaborators positively concluded that “…with the right people and entrepreneurial spirit, a viable business can be built using an Inspected Mobile Slaughter Unit.”

The program was funded by Innovation Program – Unleashing Innovation Stream, administered by Advanced Education and Technology (formerly Alberta Innovation and Science); Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Program (ACAAF); and Growing Forward – A federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

Partners included Olds College- Meat Processing/School of Animal Science; Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development – Meat Inspection, and Local Domestic Market Expansion Branches; and as well as individuals and poultry farmers.
