Published in August 2013, Planning for Food-Friendly Municipalities in Waterloo Region presented a number of suggestions for expanding upon municipal level food security policies and initiatives.  Prepared by Krista Long, a consultant for the Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable, the report bridged several existing policies, publications, and community initiatives; with the goal of developing a workable plan for future food advocacy in Waterloo.  Two noteworthy suggestions included implementing a series of zoning and licensing by-laws that support temporary farmers’ markets and community gardens, and reducing (or waiving) the fees paid by farmers’ market participants.

While tailored to the existing policies and practices of Waterloo, the author remains confident that the report would be useful to other municipalities in Ontario who are seeking inspiration for focused and feasible food policy in their region.
