The Summer Program youth leaders Intern will join Afri-Can FoodBasket staff, Senior Youth Leaders, and fellow Interns in facilitating our Cultivating Youth Leadership Program. In this program, the Urban Farm Youth Intern- Field Assistant is employed to grow food, and is introduced to urban agriculture and the intersections of food, health, and social justice.

Hours*: Monday to Friday 9 am – 5 pm
Salary: $11.25/ hour
Start Date: July 9 to August 24, 2012
Application closing date: July 3, 2012
*Some evening or weekend work may be required

Field Activities:

  • Assist in field preparation
  • Assist with planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, and care of crops
  • Assist with weeding
  • Assist in directing You-Harvest customers in the field
  • Assist with harvesting field crops Greenhouse Activities General cleaning
  • To undertake such additional training as is necessary to meet the requirements of the post
  • Assist in cleaning produce, bunching, sorting, packing CSA boxes, and other odd jobs around the farm and gardens

Farm Market Activities:

  • Assist in cleaning and preparing the Market facility for day’s activities
  • Assist in the regular market sales activities
  • Assist in preparation, display, and packaging of produce

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work directly with senior youth leaders and volunteers on the Farm by facilitating farm work and community-building activities (in partnership with Afri-Can FoodBasket Staff, Senior Youth Leaders, and other Interns)
  • Motivate, encourage, and support other junior intern participants in what may be their first work experience
  • Bring positive energy to the work.
  • Dependable attendance
  • Provides positive outdoor farming/gardening and camp experiences for children and youth
  • Completes related administrative duties and written journals and given evaluations
  • This position will require seasonal physical work in terms of installing agriculture projects, including hauling and lifting wheelbarrows with compost, lifting boxes of produce, bending, weeding, harvesting and planting

Physical Demands: Must be met by an employee to successfully perform this position. Applications will be considered for other positions that do not have this requirement in the future.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Interest in, and willingness to learn about, farming and food justice
  • Strong communication and public relations skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work within a fluid environment
  • Experience in working independently as well as in groups
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR C ( AFB will arrange training)
  • Willing work up to 30 hours per week
