Across North America, farmers’ markets have grown exponentially over the past fifteen years. In the U.S. there were 1,755 in 1994 and 5,274 in 2009. The interest in local food is fueling the growth of small and medium sized farms across the U.S.

We have little information about the impact of farmers’ markets on regional farming economies in Canada.

A new report published by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and the Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network, provides valuable information about the state of markets in this region.

In the 5 years since the Greenbelt was established, the number of farmers’ markets throughout the region has increased dramatically. Not just an ‘old-fashioned’ experience, these markets are a lively place of exchange and innovation, as food producers and consumers meet face to face.

Through focus groups with market organizers and Greenbelt farmers, and in-depth interviews, the 2010 Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network Report captures recent developments, key issues, and some of the rich potential in the market picture. Download the report.
