Upgrading kitchen equipment at Aberdeen Public School

Aberdeen Public School is located in downtown London in an area with a number of families who live in poverty. We offer a caring cupboard (a room with hygiene products, school supplies, winter coats, shoes/boots) where families can come in to take the items that they need for their families. We offer a breakfast program and daily snack program which supports the majority of our student population. Many of our students get their basic needs met through programs offered by the school.
We also have a growing population of newcomer families and families from various cultural backgrounds due to the low cost of housing in our area. We have a large population of FNMI students due to our Oneida Language program that runs daily at our school.
We were grateful to be awarded a “nourish to flourish” grant that has allowed us to upgrade our kitchen equipment with a new upright freezer and a dishwasher so we can continue to offer healthy food options to our students for breakfast and lunches. The purchase of the freezer is especially important as it has allowed us to store large quantities of food we both purchase and have donated.
We also brought in our local Growing Chefs organization to a school-wide Wellness & Resource Fair to offer their Super Taster Station – which involved students learning about their taste buds and why they prefer certain foods (ie. sweet, salty) over other foods (ie. bitter, spicy).
