Chippewa Secondary School is a Gr. 7-12 school located in North Bay, ON. We are a school of 1,300 students. We serve a diverse school population, with a substantial number of Indigenous students, both local and from smaller communities, in the urban core of the city. The “nourish to flourish” grant helped support our growing hospitality program.

The program started once we returned to school after the pandemic in 2020. The school had an industrial kitchen that had previously been used by outside companies to provide cafeteria students. After the pandemic the kitchen was vacant. The hospitality program started by offering pizzas a few days a week to our secondary students. It has now grown to offer full cafeteria services to our secondary students every day and our intermediate students once a week. The classes have also taken over our breakfast program. Students make and serve homemade bagels, muffins and breakfast cookies, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, crackers, yogurts etc. each morning, for free, to all of our student population.

The grant has allowed us to expand our capacity through the purchase of equipment. We can now freeze more fresh produce that we receive through the Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program, which might otherwise have gone to waste. We are also able to freeze baked goods made for our breakfast program.
