Pine Ridge Secondary School
Pickering, Ontario
The Nourish to Flourish Grant allowed the Pine Ridge Community to run our breakfast program the entire school year.
When I started at this school, I was shocked that we only had under two thousand dollars to run a breakfast program for the entire year. We have 1200 students that attend our school and that was nowhere near enough money to be able to sustain a breakfast program. Nourish to Flourish made it possible for us to run a breakfast program five days a week, when I started it was only three days a week. Students have been very grateful for the morning and afternoon snacks that we are able to provide to them.
Our school starts at 8am and many students have commented that they cannot eat that early in the morning. Our program allows them to still have access to food in the morning but at a later time. Several of our students are provided with some snacks to take home as we know they have food insecurities and need the extra support. For many of our students, the Breakfast Program is a highlight of their day. They often come down and grab something for later in the day as well.
Through food, we have fostered deeper relationships with our students where we can better support their needs. Thank you Nourish to Flourish!!
