At Holy Saviour School, a vibrant K-8 Catholic School with 120 students, the Nourish to Flourish grant has brought a wave of sweet, healthy, and collaborative activity. This spring, a small but enthusiastic group of students embarked on a delicious journey, centered around the school’s exciting new Ninja Creami machine, purchased with the grant funds we received this year. We also purchased a toaster, for students to make their own morning toast to enjoy alongside a creamy frozen treat.
The impact of this grant has been immediate and profound. What started as a simple idea – making healthy frozen treats – quickly blossomed into a multifaceted learning experience. Students engaged their math skills to measure ingredients, hone their literacy skills by reading recipes, and, perhaps most importantly, developed invaluable collaboration and relationship-building skills as they worked side-by-side. The shared experience of preparing these tasty creations fostered a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.
A key feature of this budding project is its integrated approach to health and community. The students proudly utilized fresh fruits from the school’s Northern Fruits and Vegetable program, supplementing with frozen fruits sourced through a burgeoning partnership with the local grocery store. This connection with community partners has been instrumental in supporting the initiative. The ultimate highlight, however, has been the joy of bringing students together to learn how to prepare a healthy treat and then share it with others, extending the positive impact beyond the initial group and fostering a stronger school community.
Holy Saviour School l is nestled in a close-knit Northern community, where strong local ties and a love for fresh, wholesome food are deeply valued. The school often serves as a hub for community activities, and this project naturally aligns with those values.
This project has connected our school with the local grocery store for their support, and helped inspire the initial “”Creami Crew”” of students. The excitement surrounding the project is palpable. As one of our keen participants enthusiastically put it, “”Making the frozen treats was super fun, but my favorite part was sharing them with my friends. It felt really good to make something healthy and yummy for everyone!””
The current success is just the beginning. Holy Saviour School plans to expand this opportunity to include all students across the school, offering a fantastic platform for student leadership and creating even more opportunities to invite community partners to share in the delicious and healthy treats.
