Sustain Ontario is excited to announce the release of our Food is Science website!
This new site is devoted to supporting educators as they teach new food literacy expectations embedded in Ontario’s Science and Technology curriculum.
With support from Ontario’s Ministry of Education and project partners, Sustain Ontario has developed a suite of lesson plans, learning videos, related readings, and student resources that allow educators to learn and teach about food and food systems in Grades 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Ultimately, the site supports teachers to jump into food literacy education!
Food is Science features publicly available educator resources from over 50 organizations from Ontario, Canada, and the United States. With the help of Ontario teachers and project collaborators, lesson plans have been modified to meet the needs of the provincial curriculum. Experiential and culturally relevant pedagogy have been prioritized, and resources have been reviewed and strengthened with the help of a team of project advisors. Learn more about the project here.
Please visit the website to see the wide-range of resources. Our Teaching About Food Systems videos are a good place to start, followed by topic-specific resources and information under each grade. At the bottom of the site you’ll find resources for all teachers, including a “getting started” section, some featured readings and videos, and links to other organizations’ food literacy resources.
After you use the resources, please don’t forget to fill out our feedback survey — we’d love to hear your comments.
A huge thanks to all the Food is Science project supporters and collaborators for contributing to this project!
