The Nutrition Resource Centre (NRC) is hosting a webinar on Bill S-228: An Act to amend the Food and Drug Act (prohibiting direct food and beverage marketing directed at children) on Thursday, October 25, from 12 – 1:30 p.m.
The Bill passed its third reading in the House of Commons on September 19, 2018. Next steps include moving through the Senate to enact the legislation and designing effective regulations.
In the webinar, former Senator Nancy Raine, who championed this bill from its inception, will describe its history. You will also hear from public health nutrition experts about the important considerations for effective M2K (marketing to kids) policy, including:
- The importance of this Bill and the regulations under this Act
- The failure of self-regulation and voluntary policy approaches to marketing to kids
- Research outlining the impact of various forms of marketing, and technologies, and their respective impacts on children
- Approaches to design effective regulations to achieve M2K policy objectives
Miranda McLellan-Granger, from the Stop Marketing to Kids Coalition, will highlight the collective work of health stakeholders and forthcoming opportunities to take action to ensure effective regulations are developed.
