The Honourable Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), announced last week the release of the Northern Ontario Agri-Food Strategy, fulfilling one of his mandate commitments. The strategy was, “developed with the input of agri-food businesses and organizations, as well as local and Indigenous communities,” according to Minister Leal, who went on to say that:
“The strategy identifies our government’s commitments to help grow the sector, such as supporting research and the growth of the food, beverage and aquaculture industries, as well as expanding livestock farming and soil mapping in Northern Ontario. I am pleased this strategy encourages businesses and communities to work together with the province to foster innovation, economic growth and job creation in Northern Ontario. The strategy also highlights success stories of innovative and research-based activities already undertaken in the north. For example, the recent transfer of the Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Station (TBARS) to Lakehead University, which undertakes research at the local level benefitting regional producers in Northwestern Ontario.”
