Are you an urban-dweller interested in propagating and growing your own fruit? If so, you won’t want to miss the Urban Fruit Propagation workshop hosted by Durham Region’s Foggy River Farm.

Whether you have a backyard, a balcony or a rooftop garden, you will learn which fruits grow well in the cold climate of the GTA. The basics of urban micro-orchard design will be covered, including:

  • the fundamentals of urban orchard/edible garden design;
  • the four fundamentals of fruit tree propagation;
  • the profit potential of growing fruit in Canada;
  • how to breed, select and graft for genetic improvement;
  • how to select the best rootstocks to graft;
  • a hands-on bench-grafting of superior fruit selections;
  • how to collect, store & root fruit cuttings;
  • information about exotic varieties, such as pawpaw, persimmon, asian pear & heartnuts;
  • and a rare plant auction at the end of the workshop.

You may choose between two different workshop dates: Sunday March 9 or Sunday, March 16, 2014. The workshop is a full-day event, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm, includes a catered vegan lunch, and will take place at 401 Richmond St. W., in Toronto.

To register for a workshop, please visit the Eventbrite page. For those who register no later than January 31, 2014, there is an early-bird-special option, which allows for 50 early registrants to graft their own fruit tree to take home. Please note, remaining participants may watch the grafting lesson, but will not receive their own tree.

Cold as it may be today, it’s not too early to start thinking about spring blooms!

Additionally, Foggy River Farms is looking for a 2014 intern. More information regarding the position can be found on their website.
