Sustain Ontario heard the news on Friday that the Chicken Farmers of Ontario has turned down a request to raise the small flock exemption number from 300 to 2000. The request was made by the Practical Farmers of Ontario back in September and Sustain has been working over the past few months to raise awareness around small flocks in the province. In short, the CFO argued that the purpose of the small flock exemption program “was not to create a commercially viable alternate avenue for chicken production and marketing such that it would have a displacement effect for commercial chicken production and marketing”.  You can read the CFO’s letter here explaining their decision or go right to our campaign website to send a message to the Farm Products Marketing Commission.
