With our “nourish to flourish” grant, students enjoyed a break from their studies to experience Three Sisters soup that they assisted in making, while we discussed companion planting, and Indigenous gardening, planting and knowledge. A lot of students tried the soup and took recipes home. We also sampled a lot of greens from a green house 1 hour away, and researched and watched a video on the production.

We’ve also had fun salad days. Having the autonomy to prepare individual salads to their liking was imperative; we encourage independence. We got seeds, local dressing, spices, Ontario cucumber and Ontario organic greens from the Farm Boy in Barrie. If a student asks, we’ll send salad leftovers home with them, otherwise we’ll use everything up the next day. Students have shared that they loved it and wished we could have salads every day. “I am having seconds and the seeds are really good on top of the salad,” one student shared.

We also visited the Kawartha Dairy in Barrie. Many students were not aware of their story so we covered that. Students got to try some of the frozen yogurt, and we compared ice cream to the frozen yogurt, discussing ingredients, cost, and taste, and also discussed the set up of Chapmans, the business itself, location, workers and the history. There was lots of interesting conversation and opinions shared. Sampling local milk was fun but the smaller size and cost became a true debate!
