Expanding program possibilities at Glen Cairn Public School

We are incredibly grateful to Sustain Ontario, Farm Boy, and Farm to Cafeteria Canada for their generous $1,000 “nourish to flourish” school grant. This support has made a meaningful and immediate impact on our ability to care for students and foster a vibrant, food-positive environment within our school community.
With this funding, we were able to purchase a stand-up freezer—an investment that has significantly transformed how we store, prepare, and share food with students. Prior to this addition, our storage capacity limited both the quantity and variety of food we could provide. Now, we can safely store a wider range of nourishing options, including fresh produce, prepared meals, and culturally diverse foods that better reflect the communities we serve.
The new freezer has enabled us to increase the amount of food available to students each day, ensuring more consistent access to healthy options. It has also expanded our programming possibilities. We can now provide whole meals and preserve them for later use—reducing food waste while maximizing the impact of every ingredient we receive.
Perhaps most importantly, this grant is helping us deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of food. As we offer greater variety, we are creating more opportunities for conversations about where food comes from, how it is prepared, and why nourishing choices matter. Students are engaging with food not just as something to eat, but as something to explore, learn from, and enjoy together.
