St. Monica’s Catholic School is a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school located in Barrie, Ontario, serving approximately 470 students. Our school community is diverse and vibrant, with a high population of English Language Learners and many families who are new to Canada. We are also aware that a number of families in our community face challenges related to food insecurity and access to nutritious food. As a Catholic school, we are committed to ensuring that every student feels welcomed, valued, and supported so they can fully participate in learning and school life.

The “nourish to flourish” grant has had a significant impact on our school community by helping us address barriers that can affect student well-being, engagement, and academic success. Through this funding, we have been able to strengthen our nutrition support programs and ensure that students have consistent access to healthy food throughout the school day. What began as a support for students in need has become an important part of creating an inclusive and caring school environment where all students can thrive.

One of the key features of our project has been the expansion of our breakfast and snack programs. Students have access to nutritious breakfast options each morning, and healthy snacks are available throughout the week. The grant has also allowed us to provide a greater variety of food options that reflect the diverse cultures represented within our school community. This has helped create opportunities for students to feel seen, valued, and connected to their school environment.

The impact of the project extends far beyond food. Staff have observed improvements in student focus, engagement, and overall well-being. Students who may have previously struggled to concentrate due to hunger are now better able to participate in classroom activities and learning opportunities. The program has also reduced stigma by ensuring that support is available in a respectful and inclusive way.

In addition to supporting students, the grant has strengthened partnerships between the school, families, and the wider community. Families have expressed appreciation for the support provided, particularly during times when the cost of living continues to create financial pressures. The project has reinforced the message that St. Monica’s is a community that cares for the whole child and recognizes that student success is closely connected to health, well-being, and a sense of belonging.

The grant has helped create a more equitable learning environment where students’ basic needs are supported and barriers to success are reduced. Through this project, St. Monica’s Catholic School continues to live out its mission of faith, service, and inclusion by ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
