At June Avenue, our “nourish to flourish” grant has truly transformed the way our students connect with food, health, and their community. With the support of this grant, we have created engaging, hands-on experiences that empower students to explore the journey of food from seed to plate.

One of the most exciting ways the grant has impacted our school is through in-class cooking opportunities. Students have learned fundamental culinary skills, from measuring and chopping to baking and tasting. One highlight was when they harvested fresh strawberries from the farm and then used them to bake with and share with their families. The joy and pride on their faces as they experienced the farm was a highlight. For many students, this is their first opportunity to connect with how our food is grown. These lessons have not only taught practical cooking skills but also reinforced concepts about nutrition, healthy choices, and teamwork.

The grant also allowed us to establish a thriving community garden. Students planted, tended, and harvested vegetables and fruits, gaining first-hand experience in sustainable gardening. From learning about soil health to understanding the needs of different plants, students developed a deeper appreciation for where their food comes from. Our garden has become a space of discovery and responsibility, encouraging students to care for living things and understand the environmental impact of growing food.

Another remarkable feature of our project was the farm visits. Students had the opportunity to explore local farms, observing the processes of planting, harvesting, and caring for livestock. These experiences brought classroom lessons to life, helping students make meaningful connections between the food they eat, the people who grow it, and the ecosystems that support agriculture.

Together, these initiatives have created a holistic food education program that emphasizes learning, sustainability, and community. Students are not only more aware of nutrition and healthy eating, but they are also excited to experiment in the kitchen, nurture plants, and engage with the broader agricultural community.

Thanks to the “nourish to flourish” grant, our students have transformed from passive consumers into curious, hands-on learners who understand and appreciate the journey of food. This project has planted seeds—both literal and figurative—that will continue to grow for years to come, fostering healthier habits, stronger connections to nature, and a lifelong appreciation for the power of fresh, wholesome food.
