With millions of students returning to school earlier this month, Stuart Benson from The Hill Times has highlighted Ontario’s opportunity to join other provinces and territories in increasing their investment in kids and families through school food.

Benson reports that Ontario is spending less per capita on school food than almost every other province.

As the Coalition’s National Coordinator Debbie Field said, “while the province’s investments are applauded, there is much more progress Ontario can be making to meet the spirit of a truly universal school food program.”

Sarah Keyes, Provincial Lead of the Coalition’s Ontario Chapter (which is hosted by Sustain Ontario), added, “with the federal funding, now is just such a good opportunity for Ontario to leverage and build on that… making school food a priority is one of the smartest decisions that the government can make.”

Sustain looks forward to continuing to work with the Ontario Chapter of the Coalition for Healthy School Food and the province to build a strong provincial program so that eventually all children and youth have access to nutritious food at school every day.
