Nora Frances Henderson Secondary School

Hamilton, Ontario

Our school’s 2024 “nourish to flourish” grant opportunity has been an incredible experience that has engaged students throughout the school and beyond. We learned a lot over the past year, faced challenges, experienced many wins and have created a community that we are very proud of.

Despite not having our first idea for a greenhouse approved due to facilities challenges, we were happy to produce a new plan to have a raised garden bed. We have established a garden club, got a raised garden bed installed on the school property, created an indoor growing space, held two school wide health promotion events surrounding healthy eating and physical activity, and stocked the kitchen classroom with equipment that will serve the school for many years to come. We have built relationships with community partners who are champions in sustainable growing and living.

With this beautiful project, we and our students achieved a good start for our institution, educating our students about gardening, cooking, and healthy eating. This knowledge will serve them throughout their lives.

We are excited to continue this work in the 2025-2026 school year! Thank you for this opportunity.
