An article published today in The Conversation stresses how Canada’s local food system faces major roadblocks without urgent policy changes.

The article came about through Sustain’s partnership with researchers at Lakehead University, as a product of our recent collaborative policy development process across Ontario and Indigenous Territories.

Written by Rosie Kerr, Charles Z. Levkoe, Leigh Potvin, and co-authored by Moe Garahan, a Sustain Board member, the article shares Sustain’s recent policy recommendations to support local food and new farmers, fishers and harvesters, as well as Sustain’s Buy Local Across Ontario Guide.

“With consumer interest in local food on the rise,” the article concludes, “this is a critical moment for governments at all levels to improve avenues for new farmers, invest in processing and storage facilities and build local distribution networks — all essential to building a robust local food system.”
