Are you an aspiring or new urban farmer interested in the emerging field of vertical farming?

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), York Region and Durham Region are collaborating on a free webinar series, Vertical Farming 101.

The four-part series will take place on Thursdays throughout February, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Details on each webinar have been copied below.

Webinar #1: Introduction to Vertical Farming – Led by OMAFRA | February 3, 2022

This webinar will introduce all things Vertical Farming, including technologies available, research, and what can be grown. Participants will have a detailed overview of to set up a farm, including a presentation from vertical farming business, Mighty Harvest Produce.

Webinar #2: Applied Principles of Vertical Farming – Led by Seneca College and York Region | February 10, 2022

This webinar will focus on real world applications of vertical farming principles through a case study presented by Boreal Greens. Participants will examine different cultivation techniques including aquaponics and hydroponics, and develop an understanding of the requirements to start and grow an indoor farming business to a commercial scale.

Webinar #3: Navigating Approvals Process and Permits for Vertical Farming – Led by OMAFRA | February 17, 2022

This webinar will provide a high-level overview of the permit and approvals process for setting up a vertical farm from a land use, building code and wastewater perspective. A recent start up business will also share their experience of obtaining permits and approvals.

Webinar #4: Community & Academia Partners for Vertical Farming – Led by Durham College and Durham Region | February 24, 2022

This webinar will focus on examples from colleges that support vertical farming, with examples of local partnerships that students have developed.
