The Great Big Crunch has heard 1,246,668 crunches since it first began in 2008.
This March, don’t miss your chance to join in the next Great Big Crunch — anyone can participate!
The Great Big Crunch, an annual event started by FoodShare Toronto, is a national movement in which students, teachers, parents, and anyone else passionate about food, crunch into apples (or any crunchy fruit/veggie) together to make noise for healthy school food.
This year, the Coalition for Healthy School Food is hosting a coordinated Canada-wide virtual Great Big Crunch on March 11th at 2:30 p.m. EST with Chef and Author Joshna Maharaj!
But you can participate in and register a “crunch” any time in March that works for you.
Here’s how it works:
Register so your crunch is counted!
Your whole class (in-person or virtual) can register together. Or you can organize a video call and ask colleagues, friends or family to join you to crunch together.
Prepare for the crunch and be sure to choose locally-grown fruits or vegetables when you can.
If your class is participating, check out the 2021 Educator Toolkit, which provides some fun curriculum-linked activities (like fractions with apples) to do at home or safely in the classroom on your crunch day. You can also check out FoodShare’s past toolkits for more ideas.
If you can’t attend the virtual Canada-wide crunch on March 11th, you can still register and plan a crunch any other day during March!
Then be sure to share your #GreatBigCrunch on social media.
Take some pictures, tag the Coalition for Healthy School Food on Facebook or Twitter, and use the #GreatBigCrunch hashtag to help turn up the noise for healthy school food.
It’s a great big way to not only celebrate healthy school food, but to also celebrate Nutrition Month, which also takes place in March!
Register to participate and learn more on the Coalition for Healthy School Food’s website here.
