Ecological Farm Internships: Models, Experience and Justice
On Food and Labour’s website, you will find a link to a report titled, ” Ecological Farm Internships: Models, Experience and Justice“, a report that provides a thoughtful and grounded discussion of ecological farm internships and related issues with many voices and contributions from farmers, interns, non-profits and lawyers. Charles Levkoe and Mike Ekers released this report this August, 2017, with a high hope to make a contribution to the issue of farm work and education. The researchers are optimistic that it will foster critical conversations that can improve the ecological farming sector. All of this information can be found on Food and Labour’s website.

Food and Labour is a digital home to a research project, The Antinomies of Non-Wage Labour in Ontario’s Food Movement and Agricultural Sector. The research within this site looks at the role of non-waged labour ( intern, apprentice, volunteer) on small and medium scale ecologically oriented farms. The research you will find here has three main objectives:
  • To examine the ways that some small-scale ecologically oriented farmers have come to rely on non-waged labour in their operations
  • To explore farmers’ and workers’ current strategies and perspectives regarding the role of non-wage work in building a transformative food movement
  • To identify the defining characteristics of workers’ experiences and explain the motivations of individuals willing to provide non-waged labour on farm
While looking thoroughly into these questions, the research seeks to understand the reasons for using non-waged labour, the experiences of interns and the pursuit of social justice within the growing food movement.
