 Full-time Senior Coordinator for a maternity leave replacement in Halifax

The overarching goal of the Our Food Project is to strengthen communities’ relationship to food by helping to build positive food environments – the physical and social spaces that help make it easier to grow, sell, and eat good food. We work at the individual, community and systemic level to increase the availability and accessibility of nutritious food and actively involve citizens in the development of more healthy, just and sustainable food systems.

Senior Coordinator, Network and Policy Development

This position is one of two project co-leads in a highly collaborative seven-person team. Co-leads are responsible for project management, long-term planning, fundraising and partnership development. Additionally, this position leads Network and Policy Development efforts, including, but not limited to, providing leadership support to regional and provincial food-related networks, participating on policy working groups, and acting as a link to national networks.

The position will support and be supported by the project team with members in Halifax, Cumberland County, Cape Breton, as well as a sister project in New Brunswick. The position reports to the EAC’s staff Directors.

We are seeking an experienced professional, comfortable leading program and policy initiatives related to health and community food security. The ideal candidate is a skilled leader and project manager. The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter and a strategic thinker, who can work collaboratively to build a vision and seize opportunities. Strong facilitation, partnership development and network development skills are essential.

Duties include:

Project Management

  • Co-leading strategic oversight and partnership development, human resources (management and team support), and fundraising efforts of the Our Food Project;
  • Project administration, such as contributing to reports, budget management, and ensuring project deliverables are met
  • Supporting project communications, such as blogging, social media, and traditional media;
  • Supporting project evaluation, data collection and reporting; and
  • Supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre and the Food Action Committee.

Network and Policy Development

  • Supporting strategic oversight and expansion of the Mobile Food Market in Halifax through participation on the advisory committee;
  • Providing leadership, coordination and advisory support to Halifax-based networks, as well as building diverse and cross-sectoral representation on the networks;
  • Participating in Food Secure Canada’s National Network, contributing to on-going initiatives at the national level (e.g., National Food Policy) and connecting provincial and national efforts;
  • Providing leadership support to guide alignment and action of policy change initiatives across Nova Scotia, including coordination of networking activities, participation on policy working groups, coordinating semi-annual policy forums and partnership development;
  • Collaborating with Our Food Project staff and regional networks to identify and contribute to policy change efforts at the local level; and
  • Other duties as required.

Required skills and experience:

  • 4 + years of professional experience in a related field;
  • 3 + years of experience managing staff and volunteers;
  • Proven ability to network and build alliances across diverse groups and organizations;
  • Familiar with policy change processes;
  • Talented coach with facilitation and leadership skills;
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, including facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Proven ability to motivate and engage others in action;
  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on time management and identifying priorities;
  • Initiative, self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Willingness to learn, experiment and adapt and comfortable with uncertainty; and
  • Commitment to social and environmental justice.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Understanding of food & food policy issues in NS;
  • Experience using developmental evaluation methods;
  • Solid understanding of health equity issues; and
  • Experience in a non-profit environment.

Terms of Employment

  • The position will begin ASAP and end early May 2018.
  • 37.5 hours per week @ $23-25/hour, based on experience
  • Cost-shared benefits plan and 4-weeks paid vacation per year (pro-rated to length of contract)
  • Hours are Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Some evening/weekend work will be required.
  • This position will be based at our Halifax office.
