During National Farm to School Month (the month of October), Farm to Cafeteria Canada (F2CC) encouraged schools across the country to #thinkandeatlocalatschool by celebrating Farm to School (F2S) activities and then sharing their stories. As an incentive to submit these stories, F2CC offered 3 $1,500 F2S grants, which would be drawn as prizes to those who registered their activities.
To start off the month Sustain Ontario’s Edible Education Network, in partnership with Ecosource, FoodShare and Roots to Harvest, put together a List of ways that schools could celebrate F2S.
During the month of October students across the province (and country!) enjoyed meals made with local ingredients, took part in local food classroom activities, cooked with local food and did some gardening, all while learning more about our local food system.
At the end of November the 3 grants were awarded to (click on the links to read their stories):
- Forest Grove Elementary, BC (to connect students to local food producers such as farmers, gardeners, chefs, bakers, cheese makers etc…)
- St. Bonaventure’s College, NL (to engage students in growing, cooking or preserving local foods at school)
- AND Ontario’s Oakwood school (to increase the amount of local foods served and eaten in the school cafeteria)
And, as for our partners, here are some of the tweets and pictures that were shared about their schools’ F2S month activities:
