Health Canada is in the process of strengthening its healthy eating recommendations and is currently seeking public input to revise Canada’s Food Guide.
The current food guide has been called outdated, confusing and ineffective, and many feel that it must do better to meet the needs of various audiences.
The public consultation will be used to: identify ways to effectively communicate nutrition information to Canadians, develop healthy eating recommendations and policies, and better understand different audiences’ use of the healthy eating recommendations.
The consultation process appears to be taking a broad perspective to healthy eating, including exploring issues such as our food environment, marketing of foods high in sugar to children, the impact of processed food and more.
The country’s food guide works to provide practical healthy eating recommendations based on complex and scientifically-based nutrition information. One of the governments most popular documents, it is certainly an important one as it influences views of healthy eating across the country, and is taught in our schools.
If you would like to have your say, be sure to participate online before December 8, 2016.
In 2017, Health Canada will hold another online consultation to share drafts of the new healthy eating recommendations.
