Four million Canadians live with food insecurity. Local food policy and broader social policies are tools being used across Ontario to combat the problem and to build reliable access to healthy food.
On today’s podcast we have Mara Shaw and Susan Belyea from the Food Policy Council for Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) to discuss the links between food security and basic income guarantee, as well a how a national food policy for Canada could help make local food more accessible to all Canadians.
Mara Shaw heads the non-profit organization Loving Spoonful, which enhances access to healthy food in Kingston. Her previous career in environmental engineering prepared her well for dealing with the complexities of the food system.
Susan Belyea has worked and volunteered with many food security organizations in Kingston. She was the founding director of Loving Spoonful, and helped to establish the Kingston Community Gardens Network and Urban Agriculture Kingston. Susan has a Masters degree in Environmental Studies from York University. She is currently pursuing a PhD on the research topic of community food systems at Queen’s University.
