Sustain Holiday header squareCommunications is central to Sustain Ontario’s service to and engagement with its members and wider food and farming networks.  We are looking for a dynamic Communications Coordinator to add design flair, on-point messaging, and enthusiastic promotion of our members’ work and efforts to build healthy food and farming across the province.  This new staff member will join a passionate food-focused team supporting diverse food and farming sectors.

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing the organization’s communications strategy with the Executive Director and implementing that strategy through management of social media tools, newsletters, publications, promotional materials, and website.

Areas of Responsibility:

Website

  • Coordinate, write, and provide editorial oversight for dynamic web content ensuring compliance with privacy and copyright rules
  • Maintain website with up-to-date information and images
  • Report and analyze website performance using analytics tools
  • Liaise with web developers on website design project delivery and maintenance
  • Provide support to administrative staff in managing domain registrations and hosting services

Technical & Design

  • Design and support webinars and webcasts hosted by Sustain Ontario by helping to create and/or source content, setting up online registration, coordinating test runs, and providing technical facilitation of events.
  • Research and advise on technology updates and recommendations
  • Use Adobe Creative Cloud and other design software for desktop publishing, creation of promotional materials, and campaign tools

Outreach and Media

  • Use Campaign Monitor, MailChimp, and other services to plan and manage the content and distribution of bi-monthly and weekly e-newsletters.
  • Use Hootsuite to maintain daily promotions and outreach for the Alliance’s networks and special projects through social media
  • Support organization’s communication with policy and decision-makers
  • Write, edit and distribute media releases and promotional packages for public outreach campaigns, fundraising, special projects, and events
  • Maintain media archive and media contact lists

Membership

  • Support integration of communications with the organization’s Membership strategy.
  • Develop membership marketing tools including recruitment brochures, new member packages, and membership promotion material
  • Support processing of new memberships, renewals and supporter giving via Membee CRM tool
  • Support updates and implementation of membership policy, terms and conditions.
  • Report and analyze membership performance as needed.

Administrative

  • Support development and implementation of organizational communications strategy
  • Track and streamline communication tool use and subscriptions.
  • Support internal communication systems (Google Drive, calendars, etc.)
  • Support hiring and training of new staff, students and volunteers.

Program

  • Coordinate special projects and campaigns
  • Interpret policy documents and coordinate feedback from members and other stakeholders
  • Plan and facilitate resource development for network development.
  • Plan and execute network events
  • Manage volunteers and students

Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary degree in Communications, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Agriculture, Public Policy, or other related field
  • Strong design skills with minimum of 2 years of experience in communications
  • Superior verbal/written skills, public relations, communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Strong writing skills and ability to synthesize complex information, particularly for web-based communication
  • Strong technical and design skills in web and social media platforms
  • Experience working within the not-for-profit sector/community-based organizations, with knowledge of Ontario food systems a definite asset
  • Passionate about food systems policy and reliable in working independently and in a team
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, Adobe CS, WordPress, Google products.  Familiarity with other platforms and tools such as Membee, Zoom, Wix, and Hootsuite an asset
  • Ability to multi-task, manage deadlines and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Professional and responsible with sensitive and confidential issues
  • Bilingualism (English/French) an asset
