The Ontario Government will convene consultations throughout Spring 2016 to develop local food access goals as it begins the next focus area for the Local Food Act, 2013.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, since the passage of the Act , key components have been put into action, including:
- The establishment of the week beginning on the first Monday in June as Local Food Week.
- The requirement for government to prepare an annual Local Food Report that highlights progress made with respect to our local food activities – the second annual report is slated for this coming June.
- The proclamation of a tax credit for farmers who donate to local food banks and other community food organizations; and
- The requirement to establish local food literacy goals.
