On Wednesday, April 9th, the National Farmers Union Youth released a video series to educate urban and rural populations alike about the major implications of Bill C-18, The Agricultural Growth Act, the omnibus agriculture bill that is currently before Parliament. The video series builds on the NFU’s on-going “Save Our Seeds” campaign to stop Bill C-18.
In the first of three ‘Save Our Seeds’ videos, Terry Boehm, a Saskatchewan farmer and former NFU President, explains how the bill would favour large corporate planet breeders’ interests over farmers’ seed-saving rights by aligning Canadian seed laws with the international UPOV ’91 system. UPOV (International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants) is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
Visit NFU.ca to watch the rest of the video series which addresses concerns about royalties and cascading rights, and “innovation manipulation”.
