Revitalizing Connections, the second national Gathering of the Aboriginal Nutrition Network (ANN), a professional practice group of the Dietitians of Canada, takes place May 13-14, 2014 at Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay.

Revitalizing Connections is the forum for the connection between food, culture, professional practice, science and traditional knowledge. Objectives of the Gathering are to:

  • highlight new and innovative initiatives in community nutrition, research, policy work and other initiatives in Aboriginal communities;
  • bring together key stakeholders working with and in Aboriginal communities to address traditional food ways, ethics, food security, diabetes;
  • provide a forum for knowledge translation for research and practice;
  • promote opportunities and continuing education for students interested in pursuing a career in Aboriginal Nutrition;
  • network and share nutrition resources among people working with and in Aboriginal communities.

This two-day comprehensive program consists of two plenary sessions and expert panel and breakout sessions, featuring practitioners, researchers and community organizations who are leaders in food security, traditional food, ways, cultural safety in nutrition programming, and innovation in Aboriginal community nutrition. The Gathering will provide dieticians and health professionals the opportunity to discuss these and other pertinent topics, enhance professional knowledge and practice, and promote careers in nutrition for First Nations, Metis and Inuit.

Ian Mosby, PhD, historian of food, nutrition and health, and author of “Administering Colonial Science: Nutrition Research and Human Biomedical Experimentation in Aboriginal Communities and Residential Schools, 1942-1952”, will deliver the keynote address.Aboriginal Nutrition Network (ANN)
