The Ontario government announced today that through their new Healthy Eating in Secondary Schools program, high schools and school boards can apply for one-time grants of up to $50,000 to support projects that would encourage healthier eating among students.

The release offers examples of projects that could be eligible for funding:

  • A training program run by a chef school to help cafeteria staff create healthier food options
  • A healthy eating club for students
  • A partnership with farmers to provide healthy, local Ontario foods to students
  • An updated cafeteria space that incorporates healthy eating information or an urban garden

The Ontario Edible Education Network is very pleased to see the province taking a step forward in helping to improve the health of Ontario high school students. See the Network’s educational backgrounder for more information on the importance of food literacy, food security, and local food procurement in Ontario Schools.
