Sick of collecting candy on Halloween? Trick or Eat offers an alternative.

Inspired by the notion of community gifting on Halloween, our friends at Meal Exchange have organized a spooky food-drive to support local food agencies across Canada. On Thursday, October 31, 2013, Trick or Eat is asking citizens across Canada to go door-to-door collecting non-perishable food items instead of candy, which can then be delivered to their local agency (food bank, shelter, community kitchen). This year’s goal is to collect over $550,000 worth of food and $50,000 in online donations to support over 100 food agencies across Canada. Notably, while food and monetary collections are the primary aim, Trick or Eat also seeks to connect and educate participants on the degree of food insecurity in their own communities and across Canada.
Interested in getting involved?
As noted by Trick or Eat organizers, the easiest way to get involved is by registering online, asking your friends and family for pledges over the next two weeks, and then participating in your neighborhood’s food-drive on Halloween night. There are several campaigns running across Canada, so just find the one nearest you.
Alternatively, you may want to organize a campaign in your community, workplace, or apartment. Organizers would be responsible for promoting the campaign in your local area, recruiting volunteers, finding a local food agency to support, planning the routes and logistics of the event on Halloween, and communicating with Meal Exchange.
And finally, you may simply donate online and support an existing campaign.
