Gold in King Township – The Holland Marsh from Sustain Ontario on Vimeo.
“Ontario’s vegetable basket,” “the GTA’s backyard garden,” and the “salad bowl of the province.” These are just some of the phrases you’ll hear in this video to describe the Holland Marsh. Located in King Township, York Region’s largest municipality, the Holland Marsh was originally a meadow that was subsequently developed into a growing area which now spans 7,000 acres. While carrots, celery, and onions remain the main crops grown in the region, the Marsh also boasts orchards as well as craft breweries and wineries featuring local ingredients. For generations, Holland Marsh growers have sustained a source of fresh food only a half-hour drive outside of Toronto, contributing to a more self-sufficient food system within Ontario and Canada.
