Blogpost from the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance

Soupstock, like it’s country sibling Foodstock, is bringing 200 chefs to Toronto for a culinary protest like no other.  This is set to be another mega-culinary event to stop the mega-quarry.

On October 21st 2012, Woodbine Park will be overrun by soup lovers and food activists alike  The Canadian Chefs Congress and David Suzuki Foundation have partnered up to host this event and raise awareness about the fight to stop the Highland Companies’ proposed limestone Mega-Quarry.

More then 200 Canadian chefs–including Jamie Kennedy, Anthony Walsh and John Higgins, will be stirring the pot with their original soup creations.

“We want Torontonians to join us for an epic event in support of stopping the  Mega-Quarry” said Chef Michael Stadtlander, champion of the Stop The Mega-Quarry movement.

The event hopes to build on the success and awareness brought about by last autumn’s Foodstock.  Similarly, with Soupstock the idea is to bring people together to sample gourmet treats inspired by the bounty the region has to offer—all while bringing awareness of the important role agriculture and this specific piece of prime land play in feeding Ontario.

“Foodstock was one of Canada’s largest-ever celebrations of great food, clean water, and healthy communities,” said Dr. Faisal Moola, director of the David Suzuki Foundation’s  Ontario program. “This year we hope to continue building  momentum by bringing the mega-culinary Soupstock event to  the city – a delicious way to inspire thousands more to join the  movement to protect Melancthon’s prized farmland and precious headwaters.”

Soupstock will be held in Toronto’s Woodbine Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 21. Funds raised will be used to build a community of support for stopping the controversial Mega-Quarry and for other environmental and food-related issues.
