Part-Time Contract Position: July 2012 to October 2012 – 15 hrs/wk (This is currently a short-term contract, with potential for longer term
employment, based on funding)
Rate of Pay: $18/hour

Afri-Can FoodBasket is looking for a passionate community organizer with food project and/or neighborhood-based organizing experience in Toronto’s low income diverse communities.  This individual will work with communities of the Greater Toronto Area to increase food access primarily through urban agriculture and youth leadership development. We are looking for a Part-Time Volunteer Coordinator who is sensitive, energetic and creative and who shares our commitment to food justice and youth leadership development through food security. The Volunteer Coordinator will manage all elements of volunteering on behalf of the organization. The role involves assessing the organization’s needs, and then meeting those needs through the recruitment, placement and retention of volunteers.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, orient and track volunteers for all AFB programs; this includes
  • Community Food Animation, Cultivating Youth Leadership and Ujamaa Farm initiatives and more
  • Work with AFB  program staff to match volunteers with a variety of skills and interests appropriately, and to ensure all volunteers receive necessary training
  • Build opportunities for volunteers to develop leadership capacity
  • Organize recognition events for volunteers
  • Represent AFB at community events, conferences and other networking engagements
  • Collaborate with other AFB Staff, and attend team meetings and training sessions
  • Complete related administrative duties such as program planning and written evaluations
  • Liaise with community associations, area schools, other agencies/programs and local residents
  • Perform other related work as assigned (some evenings and weekends required)

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in food project and/or neighborhood-based organizing experience or volunteer coordination in low income, diverse neighbourhoods
  • Interest in, and willingness to learn about urban agriculture, farming and food justice; volunteer or work experience in urban food security is an asset
  • Commitment to Afri-centric community development; commitment to collaborative learning and working
  • Experience in community outreach, and communicating with various community stakeholders and partners
  • Exceptional organizational skills; experience in project administration, data collection and reporting is an asset
  • Strong oral, verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak other languages is an asset
  • Self-motivated and able to work within a flexible environment; this includes evenings and weekends
  • Experience in working independently as well as in groups
  • Ability to work with and mentor children and youth
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, E-mail, Facebook, etc.)
  • Valid Ontario Drivers License (optional)
