New and Better Choice for Ontario Family Farmers
Peterborough, Ontario – March 03, 2012 – A new General Farm Organization (GFO) is in the making for Ontario farmers. The founding meeting of the Practical Farmers of Ontario (PFO) will be held on March 31stand is expected to be a big draw for farmers wanting to be better represented.
“It’s about time Ontario’s family farmers have a choice that meets their needs,” said Steve Dick, organic livestock farmer. “Family farms are on the endangered species list, and we need to work together to bring about change. We’re encouraged by the number of farmers from across the province who want to join the PFO. Clearly there will be strength in numbers.”
The Practical Farmers of Ontario is being created to respond to the rapidly growing movement of independent family farmers from across Ontario who are involved in the direct production and marketing of their food to consumers, and who want to have a strong voice as ecologically sound farmers. None of the current GFOs offer their membership adequate advocacy on issues that directly affect independent Ontario farmers, such as land owner rights and direct access to consumers.
The PFO vows to help family farmers take back their rights as farmers, for the good of agriculture and Ontario consumers alike.
The Practical Farmers of Ontario will hold its inaugural meeting:
