How are we Going to Feed Ourselves In Northwestern Ontario?

As a region of the province, Northwestern Ontario faces certain challenges due to its geographic conditions (such as the short 90 day frost-free growing season) and the long distance from sources of reasonably priced food and farming inputs. The long downward trend towards a “cheap food” system has created additional disadvantages because make a living as a farmer in the region difficult — how can a farmer in Northwestern Ontario possibly compete when people are used to paying so little for food? There are some encouraging signs: the low cost of land may attract new and young farmers, for example. But will that be enough to ensure the long-term food security of the people already living there?
