Having worked for almost a decade in food, agriculture, and environmental policy, it was with great excitement that I joined the team at Sustain Ontario last week.
It was an exciting week. It began with a presentation of Sheridan College students’ amazing work on Animating Good Food Ideas and a screening of Helena Norberg-Hodge’s film The Economics of Happiness. It ended with the exciting and dynamic Guelph Organic Conference. In between were meetings with farmers about provincial food policy, conference planning, research, and strategizing.
The things that we did this week are the very things that I hope to continue to do with Sustain Ontario over the coming years. I am looking forward to working with our members to better understand our food system, to educate and engage youth and the general public, to develop and implement good policy, and to connect people in all areas of the food system in order to promote healthy food and farming.
The coming months promise to be exciting and challenging. I am looking forward to working with you to craft good food policy, plan the upcoming Bring Food Home conference, share good food ideas, and ensure that food is on the agenda in the upcoming provincial election. Â I am also very much looking forward to connecting with those of you I have not yet had the chance to meet and to reconnecting with those of you that I have had the pleasure of working with before. Above all, I am looking forward to celebrating our victories on the way to creating a food system that is healthy, ecological, equitable and financially viable.
Sincerely,
Ravenna Alnuaimy-Barker
