The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation announced January 22 that it was providing $35,000 to the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD) to put into action the goals and mandate of the Durham Region Food Charter. Endorsed by Durham Regional Council last December, the Charter reflects the community’s vision for a food secure Durham Region focused toward building a just and sustainable local food system as a foundation for population health.

The CDCD will work with community partners and the Region of Durham to develop a community-based Action Plan and a Working Group focused on shaping food security policy to promote local environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The project will provide structure to accomplish the vision of the Charter and with the ultimate goal of establishing a Food Policy Council for the Region of Durham.

23% of the Greenbelt’s farms are located in Durham. 57% are livestock farms and there are many fruit and vegetable crops from the region, including corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, apples, strawberries and raspberries.
