Want to change the world… one cheese at a time?
Please join Monforte
for an eye-opening conversation
about microfinancing and the politics of food
Monforte Dairy in partnership with Sustain Ontario and Hart House invites you to attend our TOWN HALL on Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 2 – 4 pm at Hart House in Toronto for a discussion of Community Shared Agriculture, the Monforte Model and sustainable food issues.
For this, Monforte’s second Town Hall, we’ve teamed up with Lauren Baker, Executive Director of Sustain Ontario, and Roscoe Handford, 2009 Green Toronto Award winner and manager of the Stop’s Green Barn Farmers Market. Together, we’d like to continue the conversation with you about the principles of Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) and the politics of food production, distribution, employment and equity in Ontario.
CSA is an alternative local food funding/marketing model. CSAs create a direct link between consumers and food producers, diminishing the risk producers bear and raising consumers’ awareness of their food’s provenance. Monforte is taking this model a step further, to help finance the building of its new dairy.
CSAs means everyone has the opportunity to have a voice in changing the politics of how quality food is produced, distributed, marketed and sold in Ontario.
Since launching Renaissance 2010 mid-February, Monforte has raised almost $200,000 from people who care about passionately about their food.
Monforte Dairy is southwestern Ontario’s premier artisanal cheese company, owned and operated by Ruth Klahsen. Known for its range of extraordinary cheeses, made from local seasonal Ontario sheep and goat milk, Monforte is the supplier of choice to five-star restaurants, leading wineries and progressive food retailers throughout Ontario and people who enjoy good cheese.
Sustain Ontario, The Alliance for Healthy Food and Farming, is a province-wide, cross sectoral alliance that promotes healthy food and farming. Sustain Ontario takes a collaborative approach to research, policy development and action by addressing the intersecting issues related to healthy food and local sustainable agriculture. Sustain Ontario is working towards a food system that is ecological, equitable and financially viable.
Roscoe Handford, 2009 Green Toronto Award Winner. Beginning in 1997, Roscoe Handford worked unceasingly to save the neglected Wychwood TTC streetcar repair barns from the wrecker’s ball. She mobilized community, gathered resources and built a collaborative vision for an eco-friendly paradise—the Artscape Wynchwood Barns near St.Clair and Christie. Roscoe has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and imagination in helping to create a uniquely sustainable site in the middle of a residential community.
Please join us at Hart House, 7 Hart House Circle, Saturday, June 27th, 2 – 4 pm, and let us know you’re coming!
