Iowa is an unlikely leader in the movement to create regional food economies. The research and practical work of the Leopold Centre for Sustainable Agriculture is relevant to those of us in Ontario interested in strengthening the local food economy.

This article briefly describes the recent work of the Centre’s Marketing and Food Systems Initiative.

Perhaps more interesting is Rich Pirog’s reflection on his work with the Centre over the past 20 years. He outlines the program’s past successes and challenges into the future.

As Sustain Ontario begins to define a research and action strategy to support regional food economies across the province, I find the link between local food and health articulated by Pirog and the Centre’s research reports inspiring.
