Toronto Urban Growers a Sustain Ontario member is holding Food Tours across Toronto this summer beginning on May 26th! These tours are presented by the 12th annual assembly of the Canadian Association of Food studies (CAFS) and Toronto Urban Growers (TUG).

Tour 1: Full day tour: Community Food Centres, Friday, May 26th, 2017
- Stops include: Greenest City/Parkdale, The Stop, Foodshare, Scadding Court community Centre
- Public transport and walking tour of food centers in the city that aim to transform and bridge their diverse communities
- Addresses neighborhood pockets of food deserts and food insecurity
- See how each site addresses food needs
Tour 2: Full Day Tour: Food, Well-Being, Indigeneity, Friday, May 26th
- Stops include: Native Child and Family Services, Four Winds Indigenous Health and Well-Being Program, the University of Toronto via First Story – lunch stop at Nish Dish
- Run by a Rivers Rising ambassador on Toronto’s Lost Rivers
- Learn about the place of food in indigenous culture and history and its presence in Toronto
- Beautiful Sweat lodge visit where you will learn about community healing and connecting in an Indigenous Program housed in a non-Indigenous organization
- At UofT, First Story will show you the burial grounds and medicine gardens
- Purchase food at First Nations marketeria while learning about Indigenous traditions with food and business in Toronto
Tour 3: Full Day Tour: Toronto’s Changing Markets, Saturday, May 27, 2017
- Stops include: Evergreen Brickworks, St. Lawrence Market, Kensignton Market
- Visiting new and old markets will allow you to learn the role, benefits, challenges and responses of food markets
- Led by a local expert who will detail the socio-political climate of the efforts to re-establish Toronto as a Market city
Tour 4: Half Day or Full Day. Full Day (includes 4a & 4b): Urban Agriculture in Downtown East, Saturday, May 27th, 2017
- This walking tour is divided into two parts that show the diversity in urban agriculture methods, stakeholders involved, organizations partnering that bring respect for nature and community connections.
- Part one will explore the public and school engagement showcasing a historic conservatory, hands-on school programming and creative uses of spaces
- Par two will show the transformation and renewal of Regent Park, the projects, and programs that have begun as a response to address the most vulnerable population, animate the space and build community engagement.
- Final stop will be at Moss Park, a nearby high-rise social housing area
Tour 4a: Half Day: Urban Agriculture: Parks and Schools, Saturday, May 27, 2017
- Stops include: Allan Gardens, The Bowery Project, Winchester School Garden
Tour 4b: Half Day: Urban Agriculture: Parks and Schools, Saturday, May 27, 2017
- Stops include: Regent Park area and community, Moss Park
