Local Producers’ Area at Ontario Food Terminal

The Farmer’s Market at the Ontario Food Terminal is growing! Plans for a 50,000 sq. ft. climate-controlled market area for local producers were announced this spring by the Ontario Food Terminal Board. The new area will improve access for Ontario farmers to over 5,000 registered wholesale buyers at the Terminal.

In the current Farmer’s Market area at the Terminal, there are 400 tenants in a covered, open-air space.  In season, they sell locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers daily that find their way to neighbourhood stores, farmers markets, and local restaurants.  Some of the 21 indoor warehouse tenants at the Terminal also offer local produce.

On July 22, Sustain Ontario staff toured the Farmer’s Market and Warehouse areas of the Ontario Food Terminal at the invitation of the Ontario Produce Marketing Association, a new Sustain Ontario member.  The OPMA is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization whose primary objective is to facilitate trade and enhance the marketing and promotion of fresh fruits and vegetables in Ontario.  It’s Learn, Live, Love Local campaign features valuable information about Ontario produce and ideas for including local produce in your daily routines.  It’s Produce Made Simple site promises “everything you want to know about produce” including how to select and store, recipes, and nutrition facts.
